Timor: Land of the Rising Sun

Timor – The Rising Sun
The Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste is a small lower-middle income country in the World Bank’s East Asia and Pacific region. Foreigners ruled East Timor for closely five hundred years, longer than any other country in Asia. The country gained independence from Indonesia in 2002 – the nation is one of the youngest in the world. Timor is the young, fragile and emerging nation. It has more than 92% Catholics. But it struggles with many issues. East Timor has a population of 1.24 million. 20% of the population is unemployed and 52% of the people live on less than 1.25 US dollars a day. About half the population is illiterate; more than 40% lives in poverty, childhood malnourishment, and high level of stunted growth. It ranks third on UN’s World Hunger Index (the only nation in Asia in the top 10).
