Second Thoughts and First Impressions

This is a brief review of an e-book, meant to be read on one’s computer or tablet, as millions of readers are doing today. This little volume [30 articles, 123 pages] consists of the selected writings of Fr. Myron J. Pereira SJ, on subjects mainly related to the country, and to the Indian Church.

Father Myron has spent more than five decades as an academic, journalist, editor and writer of fiction. He contributes regularly to UCA News on religious and socio-cultural topics. UCAN believes that most people get their information today online, and express their opinions the same way. This selection of writings is meant to tap into this growing readership.

Here are some of the topics, Fr. Myron has written about: the concept of “life after life”— our life after death. The article “Does a black Jesus matter?” asks whether our imaginations are so colonized that we think whatever is white is pure and beautiful, and whatever is black becomes ugly and demonic.

In another column, he reflects on the influence of the Jesuits in the development of Christian art in India. The author also sheds light on other topics such as the mission of the Church in India, its political and social scenario, the persecution of Christians in this so-called “tolerant” country, and so on.

Indeed one is impressed by the wide sweep of topics covered, as well as the author’s lucid and forceful style. The articles are concise, and offer much food for thought. An e-book worth buying, and reading again and again.
