Fr. Lancelot Pinto, SJ (BOM) 1933 – 2022

For the last several years, Fr. Lancy resided at St. Xavier’s High School Community, Fort, Mumbai.   On Thursday, 24th March 2022 he celebrated his 50th sacerdotal anniversary. He vested in his ordination cassock which fitted him just the same as it did 50 years ago.

His invitees included close family members and a few members of the ‘Jesus Light of the World’ – a group he animated for 40 years.

On this occasion his family did their best to recall all the significant contributions he made to each of their lives.

‘After I die, you’ll say words of praise but I won’t hear. Praise me now instead.’

Lancy was praised when he lived.

In this same year on 30th July 2022, he completed 60 years in the Society of Jesus.

Fr. Lancy had laboured in various institutions as administrator in South Mumbai. The people he worked with found him to be a gentle man at work. He operated from a lot of experience, in-depth knowledge of accounting, ever ready to help, a sharp memory for details, a sense of humour and a joyful spirit. In September 2022 he had a freak fall which hurt his hip. He recovered from his surgery. Unfortunately, due to other complications he found it difficult to swallow. This made him weaker and he succumbed to this weakness.

I consider this to be his third jubilee in a row – now with the Lord. He had all his friends visit him.   He truly exemplifies the old adage ‘age gracefully’.

Fr. Lancy you edify us with your active positive life, lived till the end. May you continue to intercede and inspire – now with the Lord by your side.
