JYOTI – A Unique Youth Movement Completes Fifty Years

JYOTI (Jamshedpur Youth Organization for Tomorrow’s India), a youth platform of High School and Collegestudents, operating under the patronage of the Jamshedpur Jesuit Mission, completed 50 years (1971—2021) in the formation of youth, besides engaging them in humanitarian services. This youth platform was formed inadvertently after the First Youth Camp held in mid-December, 1970. Since then, it has grown by leaps and bounds, making it the only common platform for extracurricular life of youths.

Uninterruptedly, efforts have been kept up to mould our youth through its main three-fold objectives—Students’ Fellowship, Leadership Training and Humanitarian Service. Underlining its humanitarian engagements, this Organization has responded to many emergencies of natural and manmade calamities. The Refugee Service carried out by our youth on the borders of East Bangladesh during the Indo-Pak War of 1971 was beyond imagination. Because of its ever-ready attitude, members of JYOTI havetravelled to the neighboring States of Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal and Assam, to reach out to people affected by riot, cyclone, flood, and the like in succeeding years. Today, this Movement continues to immerse itself in a variety of social services on the basis of small Units spread in 19 prominent institutions in Jamshedpur.

The Golden Jubilee Celebration in March 2022, was indeed an occasion to rejoice and acknowledge the efforts of youths and innumerable Moderators, come and gone during its 50 years. May JYOTI continue to surge ahead in its efforts of making the youth grow, and dream to be leaders of tomorrow’s India and the world at large.
