In the year 1893 the Propaganda Fide had issued an instruction urging the Bishops to activate evangelization work in their territories, and asked them to report in six months. This urgent request rang a bell at the Archbishop’s House, Bombay. A couple of years earlier, the Daughters of the Cross of St. Joseph’s Convent Bandra had baptized 14 of their Gujarati servants and dependents, who had insistently asked for baptism. Archbishop Theodore Dalhoff did not hide his annoyance when he learned that such a step had been taken without his knowledge. Who would take care of them when they returned back to their villages?
