A pilgrim (Latin peregrinum) is a person who wanders or travels with an aim and an objective in mind: a child of God who strives to find God in the mundane journey of life. Men and women down the centuries have been pilgrims wanting to thank God or to experience Him interiorly. In his Autobiography Ignatius of Loyola considers himself a pilgrim (15); for his pilgrimage he ordered a long garment and bought a pilgrim’s staff (16.5). Christian pilgrimages emphasize walking in the footsteps of Jesus, Mary, the apostles, the saints and martyrs. It is in venerating them that we honour God. Ignatius made his pilgrimage to Jerusalem in 1523 and devotedly walked in the footsteps of Jesus his Master (38-48).
