The labour of Italian Jesuits in the Vineyard of Karnataka

A STILL SMALL VOICE: Profiles of Jesuit Pioneers in Karnataka is the English translation by Fr Richard Sequeira of the Italian book ‘I Saniassi Romani’ (The Roman Sanyasis) by Domenico Ferroli, SJ.Originally written for his Italian readers in 1955 by Ferrolito familiarise them with the pioneering work of evangelisation by mostly Italian Jesuits in the old Mysore Regionin the pre-suppression period (pre 1773), the book extensively documents the labours of those Jesuits, restless for Christ. Among the profiles are familiar names like Leonardo Cinnami (1609-1674) – the founder of the Mysore Mission, Manoel De Cunha – martyred in Anekal in 1711, Antonio Maria Platei -who died in Chickarasinakere, Maddur in 1719. Ferroli (1887-1970) who worked for 40 years in Karnataka, was specially commissioned by the then Superior of Calicut Jesuit Mission to write on the pioneering Jesuits. He wrote 2 volumes – ‘Jesuits in Malabar’ and ‘Jesuits in Mysore’.When he returned to Italy, he found more material in Rome and brought out the extensively documented‘I Saniassi Romani’ in Italian. The book is a mine of information on the agonies and ecstasies of evangelisation and is a precious addition to the literature on Missiology and Jesuit History.
