Fr Ladislaus Rego, a Jesuit of the Goa Province, left for his heavenly abode on November 11, 2019, after struggling with cancer and other ailments. He celebrated his 82nd birthday on September 19. Laddy, as he was fondly known in his community, served as Principal at Vidya Mandir High School, Nesargi for 19 years. He also served as Principal of Rosary High School, Ajra. While in Nesargi he had the additional responsibility of being the Director and Superior of the Christ Nivas Boy’s Hostel. Besides these tasks which he carried out marvellously in difficult and trying circumstances, Laddy was parish priest at Milagres Church, Khanapur and Rosary Church, Ajra.
But far more than this Fr. Ladislaus was known by all, especially during his last years, as a man of great spiritual depth. Consequently, sisters, diocesan priests and even bishops came to him regularly for confession and spiritual direction. He was always a simple, humble person. Though he was tall everyone knew him as a gentle giant, especially the poor and needy wherever he worked.
Fr. Ladislaus’ last few months were difficult and painful. But he bore everything with courage. Many of his non-Christian students came to pay their last respects to him. We wish a hope-filled, though sad, goodbye to our gentle giant who has gone to celebrate Christmas at Home.
