I had three novice masters in two years; one did not die as a Jesuit. He was asked to leave the Society. The man who succeeded him, touted as a very holy person, told me more than five times that I did not have a ‘vocation’. His words, “We do not harbor clowns in the Society of Jesus” were repeated ad nauseum by my part-time friends and full-time enemies.
