Many Catholic Christians imagine that Jesus was a chronically grim person. This is perhaps because they mostly look at him one-sidedly as a divine Person, forgetting that he was at the same time a truly human person, who is not only our Savior but also our life-Model. St Luke insists that “Jesus increased in wisdom and in years, and in divine and human favor” (2:52). And Jesus can be a Model for us human beings precisely because of his own human qualities of mind and heart.
