It was in 1993 that I first started using some verses from the Sermon on the Mount in my talks on institutional development in education: A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit; neither can a corrupt one bring forth good fruit … Wherefore by their fruits you shall know them (Matt. 7:18,20). I have used them countless times since. In the beginning, they captured for me the twin pillars that support any good institution: an ethical foundation for its operations, and an institution-driven vision of student-centeredness.
