Fr. Ornellas Coutinho (GUJ), affectionately called ‘Orny’, was born on 6th August 1942, in Goa; joined the Jesuits on 20th June 1961, pronounced his first vows on 21st June 1963 at Vinayalaya, Bombay; ordained a priest in Bombay, on 7th April, 1973; pronounced his final vows on 21st June 1980 and was called to eternal life on 27th October 2022 in Baroda.
Volumes can be written about Orny, who was a complete Jesuit and who served with distinction in various capacities, both at the Province and Assistancy levels. Orny was truly a person for others.
Orny was a great companion – a community person to the core. He was always there, when one needed him. He was able to bring the community together as Superior, he ensured that his community was open and welcoming to all.
Orny radiated charm – his smile was warm and effusive. He endeared himself to all: the young and old, students and staff, parishioners and ex-students. He was inclusive and generous. His wide circle of friends, cut across every divide! Everyone felt comfortable in his presence: from an erring student to a support staff who desperately needed financial help.
Orny lived collaboration – he was a team-player. Football as a team sport, reached new heights in Gujarat, during his Presidentship of the Football Association. As Principal, he ensured that every single child would participate in the school annual days, which meant parents and others would all come to see their ward perform. ‘Cooperation’ was his catch-word; everyone collaborated with Orny willingly and cheerfully.
Dear Orny, we miss you very much.
