The letter written on 7th August 1547 by St. Ignatius to the Jesuits of Padua, highlights the inner spirit with which one is invited to live a life of poverty. The context of this communication was the actual poverty suffered by the Jesuits at Padua due to the insufficient support provided by Andrea Lippomani. In response to an economic situation where the Jesuits suffered a severe deprivation, Ignatius wrote a profoundly insightful letter on poverty – a letter which could be rated as a spiritual masterpiece. The contents of this letter can be broadly divided into three parts, where he speaks about the nobility, advantages and joyfulness of poverty.
