Have we ever wondered, ‘How did Francis Xavier, and his saint-confreres (Faber, Canisius, Kostka, etc.,) pray?’ or ‘Who was responsible, under God, for training them in holiness and prayerfulness?’ The answer, of course, is that St. Ignatius of Loyola was the Spiritual Director and ‘formator’ for many years, of the young Francis Xavier (and the others), and that they learnt to pray from their mentor’s Methods of Prayer, now a chapter in the famous book, “Spiritual Exercises.”
