Years ago, when I was studying at St. Joseph’s College, Bangalore, I heard a lovely hymn being sung. It was sung in a melodious voice by no less a person than the late Fr. Cecil Saldanha SJ, the well-known botanist of Karnataka. He handled the classes on religion for the graduate students. He told us that the hymn was composed by Cardinal John Henry Newman. Ever since that moment in 1965, the hymn ‘Lead Kindly Light’ has remained one of my favourite hymns. It is replete with a lot of intense emotions, coming as it did from a man who was a sincere seeker after truth. I just cannot forget those words, “I do not ask to see the distant scene. Just one step enough for me.”
