Fr. Rufino passed away peacefully on 9th August 2022, at Xavier Residence, Porvorim, Goa. He would have been 90 years old on 4th September 2022. He served people in Goa, Patna and Nepal, for a total of 54 years.
On 4th September 1932, Rufino was born in Moulmein, Burma. He worked for several years before joining the Society. He brought along with him, significant life experiences and a commitment to hard work. He had a clear goal to be a missionary in Patna. Thus, he entered the Society on 3rd July 1958, at Vinayalaya, Bombay. His formation was at XTTI, Maner in Patna and Jnana Deepa in Pune. He was ordained on 17th March 1968. His ministries included pastoral work in Marpa, and Minister and Treasurer at St. Xavier’s School in Jaipur. His earlier experiences made him well suited to be the treasurer at Vidya Jyoti, Delhi. He was missioned to a similar role in Jawalakhel, Nepal. He was the Rector of the community and school in Godavari. His poor health necessitated his transfer to the more congenial climate of Goa where he recouped his strength. In Goa, he held responsibilities as treasurer-minister of Jesuit communities.
His concern for the welfare of the community won him love and respect. He led a simple life of poverty. His smiling countenance and cheerfulness, made people to approach him freely. His patient listening and wise counsel had a calming influence on people.
From 1st June 2019 onwards, he was at the Health Care Facility in Porvorim, Goa. His ailing health did not deter him to pray for the Church and Society. His prayerful support enabled Jesuits in mission to be effective in the works of the Society, providing hope to sustain their works.
