Evangelization ministry among the local Gujarati population did not begin in Gujarat nor was it initiated by priests. The work was begun by the Daughters of the Cross in St. Joseph’s Convent, Bandra, Mumbai. Towards the end of 1891, Sr. Mary Paul baptized a dying child of one of their domestic workers. The loving concern of the Sisters moved the family deeply, and the father of the child, with his wife and four relatives began their catechumenate on Sunday, 3rd May that year and, after four months of religious instructions, eight of them including two children, received Baptism on 8th September 1891.
