The first time I met Fr. Isudas Cueli was way back in 1973, when I joined the Jesuit pre-novitiate in Ahmedabad. When the pre-novitiate in charge, Fr. Castiella, asked me who my ‘spiritual father’ was, I had no idea what he was talking about. So, he told me meet Fr. Isudas Cueli. I went to him and asked innocently, “What is a spiritual father?” I talked with him for only 20 minutes and left his room not knowing what more to talk. Our first meeting ended rather abruptly but our relationship lasted till he passed away.
