The sudden demise of Fr Roshan Lobo has stunned the Karnataka Jesuits and many others who had known him as a zealous priest, a dedicated teacher and an affectionate friend. He died of a cardiac arrest on 13th August, 2021. He was a sincere and committed Jesuit who labored, in the spirit of Magis, in the Lord’s vineyard.
Born in 1971 in Belthangady, Dakshina Kannada, Fr Roshan joined the Society of Jesus in 1989, and was ordained a priest in 2003. Roshan had a Masters in Electronics from St. Joseph’s College, Trichy, and an MPhil from Bangalore University. He taught for six years in St. Joseph’s College, Bengaluru. After tertianship, he took over as Principal of St. Joseph’s PU College, Bengaluru, and was at its helm for four years. Then, having opted for a stint in the missions, Roshan was assigned to Mundgod where he functioned as the Secretary and Treasurer of North Karnataka Jesuit Educational and Charitable Society for eight years, during which period he also taught mathematics in Loyola School and served as pastor of a substation – Ugginkeri. In 2021, he was assigned to Jesuit Nivas to be the Secretary and Treasurer of Bangalore Jesuit Educational Society – a post he held only for a few months before the Lord called him to His Company.
Whatever be the task assigned to him, Roshan did it with utmost devotion and dedication. He fought shy of formalities and felicitations that put him in focus. Roshan kept abreast of the latest laws, rules and regulations pertaining to his job. He had an innate love for nature. His delight was to spend time in the farm and the garden. He loved animals, particularly dogs and cows and sheep.
Adieu, dear Roshan, till we meet again.
Francis Menezes, SJ
