Democracy is rightly defined as “the government of the people, by the people and for the people.” Real power in a democracy is vested in the hands of its citizens by the exercise of their franchise to choose a Government. The picture of a democratic republic is clear in the Preamble to the Constitution, which envisages not only a democratic form of government but also a democratic society infused with the spirit of ‘justice, liberty, equality and fraternity’. In a democracy, people have the freedom to raise their voice against the government, and express their opinion without any force, but today it is unfortunate that the values of democracy are being destroyed by authoritarianism.
