The development of social action in the Patna Jesuit Province was spectacular. The beginnings qualify as a case study for understanding the meaning of three terms which Jesuits consider as defining characteristics of their mission: apostolic aggressivity, depth (intellectual, emotional and spiritual), and solidarity with the poor.
