2019: Whither, South Asia?

In India 2019 denotes election year for the Parliament! In Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina has won a massive victory for a third term, notwithstanding the allegations. Sri Lanka is undergoing political turmoil. Pakistan ended the political struggle, at least for the present, with Imran Khan as Prime Minister. Nepal seems to be well settled for a secular regime. Afghanistan, it looks, is unable to outdo the fundamentalists. Bhutan remains eco-silent! Maldives looks uncertain about itself! Overall, South Asia is politically rather unsettled and volatile. Big brother India is not big enough to reach out in political imagination to the neighbours and create a viable socio-economic entity out of South Asian polity. Should we leave the fate of South Asia to politicians! Isn’t it time civil society in South Asia starts imagining another South Asia, with open borders and free trade? What can and should we Jesuits do to initiate a meaningful South-Asian discourse?
